Belle Robes Atelier Sustainability
The most sustainable dress is the one that gets worn more than once.
That is the whole idea behind Belle Robes. Not a slogan we bolted on - it is how the business actually works.
A quick, honest look at the problem
Australia has a bit of a wardrobe habit. We buy more clothing per person than any other country on earth - around 53 new items each, every year - and a good deal of it gets worn only a handful of times before it is thrown out. In 2023 alone, more than 222,000 tonnes of clothing went into Australian landfill.
The single most useful thing any of us can do about that is simple: wear what already exists, more often. Hiring is one of the easiest ways to do exactly that.
One dress, many nights, many women
When you hire a Belle Robes piece, you are wearing a designer dress that might otherwise sit in a wardrobe between one or two outings a year. Instead it does the rounds - your engagement party, someone else’s race day, a third woman’s black-tie do. One garment, properly cared for, doing the work of a dozen.
(There is good research behind this: extending the active life of a garment by even nine months can cut its carbon, water and waste footprint by 20 to 30 per cent. Our dresses stay in service for years.)
Curated, not stockpiled
We don’t chase volume. We hold a small, carefully chosen range of quality designer and vintage pieces - the kind built to last and made to be worn again and again. Fewer, better dresses, kept in circulation for as long as we can keep them looking their best. That is the opposite of fast fashion, and it is deliberate.
Cared for, and mended
Every piece is professionally dry-cleaned before it goes out (which is also why it reaches you fresh and ready to wear). When a dress needs a stitch, a press or a small repair, we do it - rather than retiring it early. Keeping a garment in good nick is quietly one of the most sustainable things we do.
Packaging that doesn’t cost the earth
We have thought about this part properly:
- Lighter pieces ship in home-compostable mailers.
- Heavier pieces travel in sturdy, reusable satchels made to go back and forth, not into the bin.
- Every parcel includes a prepaid return label, so the dress comes straight back to us and heads out again - no detours, no waste.
We are not perfect on packaging yet, and we will keep improving it as we grow.
What we won’t pretend
We would rather be straight with you than slap “eco” on everything. Hiring is a genuinely lower-impact way to enjoy designer fashion, but it isn’t impact-free - there is dry-cleaning, there is postage, there are vans on the road. What we can promise is that we keep our range small and well-worn, our packaging as low-waste as we can manage, and our claims honest. As we grow we will keep finding ways to do better, and we will tell you about them plainly when we do.
Your part is the easy bit
Hire the dress. Have a wonderful night. Send it back in the prepaid satchel. That is it - you have just given a beautiful frock another outing, instead of buying something headed for the back of the cupboard.
Style, elevated - and a little lighter on the planet.
